"I see the sunflowers and think of you!"

- Princess Apricot

The Sunflower Plains (ヒマワリの草原, Himawari no sōgen) is one of the largest areas in The World, and the second Wonder Spot. Other than sunflowers, the plains also has much tilled land, as well as several rows of melons that grow in it. The entrance to the area is located beyond the Dark Valley and scarecrows point the way through the plains to the Melon Patch on the other side.

The Sunflower Plains are a large, open area with many obstacles and winding paths, and one that is necessary to traverse to progress the game's story. As this area is accessed shortly after the tutorial section and defeat of the first boss, the Onii King, the Plains act as a trial of everything the game has taught the player so far, allowing them the freedom to put their knowledge to the test and choose the way in which they wish to approach them. As such, the area is famous among Little King's Story players for being the point of the game at which many newcomers sadly quit.

Geography[]

The main area of the Sunflower Plains is the path leading from the Dark Valley in the east to the Melon Patch in the southwest. The northern half of Sunflower Plains can only be accessed through the Kingdom of the Jolly, after Corobo has conquered that kingdom. The Plains become owned by the Kingdom of Alpoko after the Jolly and Ripe Kingdoms are conquered by Corobo.

There are two gimmicks in Sunflower Plains. The first is that there are many twisting paths that allow Corobo to traverse the area in a variety of ways, forcing him to choose and switch between a higher path or a lower path. There is no wrong path to choose through, although some are blocked by certain obstacles, meaning Corobo only has the option to use them if he has the right job class. The second gimmick, which is the basis for the area's name, is that Corobo and his Royal Guard encounter the nocturnal UMA, Moonflowers, after 6PM. The Moonflowers will disguise themselves as regular sunflowers during the day, signified by the "sunflower" swaying faster than the others.

The Sunflower Plains is accessed by either cutting through the Onii King's battlefield or by dropping off the outer clifftop of the Dark Valley. Either way, the Plains open with a field of many sunflowers, which contains a sign from the Sunflower Club recommending a Miner to make the journey through the Plains easier, as well as the second Wonder Spot. A thin cliff leads to an Art piece, and teases the presence of the Marble Dragon in the Jolly Kingdom on the other side of a large cliff.

Corobo can then choose one of two ways to go: staying on the raised hill path, which requires a Ripped Miner to continue across, or taking a nearby slope down to the lower path, which is more dangerous as Escargoo will shoot poison from above, but has several pots with arrows and a Hot Spring. The upper path curves around towards a middle section and passes a hole with a Cockadoodledo and a Gold Bar, as well as a Rocky in the path and a Blue Tree containing an Art piece. The lower path goes along the coast and leads Corobo past several Meloncholies, Moonflower spots, and a Cockadoodledo, but also contains a peninsula with an Art piece. Past the Cockadoodledo is another fork in the path, both covered by logs: the northern path goes through a small valley that meets up with the upper path from earlier, and the southern path goes along the coast.

The southern coastal path is long and has many spots where Moonflowers will appear at night, but the most direct route to the Melon Patch, but leads past several hills with Cockadoodles sitting on top, which will shoot feathers at Corobo and his Royal Guard below. This path contains another Art piece and several holes that can be dug for treasure, before ending at the bridge to the Melon Patch.

The northern path through the small valley contains another Hot Spring under a rock and takes Corobo up onto the top of the hills containing the Cockadoodledos, the same one that the southern path passes. If he drops off the side of the hill southwards, he will end up on that southern coastal path. However, Corobo can walk across this hill to the end if he has a Miner, and defeating one of the Cockadoodledos will net him a Weapon. Heading south at the end of this path will lead neatly to the bridge to the Melon Patch. Going north at the end of this path instead will lead to a large Hot Spring and a Purse.

Corobo can also drop off on the northern side, which will lead to a vegetable patch surrounded by hills on all sides. This field containins some Meloncholies, a Cockadoodledo and several scarecrows indicating a hidden hole housing an Expensive Horn which can be sold for several million Bol. Destroying some rocks at the edges of the field allows Corobo to climb back onto the hilltops, specifically the part which has the Purse and large Hot Spring mentioned earlier.

Finally, north from the Melon Patch bridge and a little south from the Hot Spring and Purse is a long field that overlooks Firefly Lake. The Wonder Spot for Firefly Lake can be found here, and if this area is returned to, a Concodore may appear. There is also a hole with several chicken-like UMA and some worthwhile treasure.

No matter the path taken, the Melon Patch bridge signifies the end of this area.

Later in the story, a northern strip of Sunflower Plains can be visited via the Kingdom of the Jolly, after Corobo has defeated King Duvroc. This area contains a variety of Moonflower spots, two Art pieces, and another scarecrow-indicated hidden hole containing expensive treasure.

Music[]

The music for this area is shared with the Forests: a slow, sinister remix of Schubert's "Marche Militaire" with several sections shifted around and repeated.

Trivia[]

  • The Grunt Soldiers refer to this area as a "secret garden beyond the valley of the Onii King" that they had heard about through a rumor.
  • Given that the path between the northern part of the Plains and the Kingdom of the Jolly is absent from the map, it's possible that the upper half was supposed to be part of the main path before being sectioned off with fences.
  • An unused Uncle Tin sign was planned to appear in this area. It reads "Sunflower Natural Preserve [...] ~Wild Sunflowers~ [...] It seems that as the strange kings retired, the sunflowers bloomed much brighter [...] Sunflower Expert, Uncle Tin."
